My Fathers Story

My father’s brother was a very successful aerospace engineer.

Although an expert at physics, he knew little about nutrition.  He had his 1st heart attack when he was 42 years old and then died of a subsequent heart attack 10 years later. Two of my father’s uncles in also died of heart attacks in their 50’s.

When you are a young adult in your 20’s, to be in one's 50’s sounds old. When you reach middle age, it doesn’t seem so old anymore.

What does it mean to die young. And by young, I mean at less than 70 years of age. It means that your spouse is alone and your children without a father or mother. It means that you may not have the chance to see your children get married. You will most likely never see your grandchildren. Your grandchildren will lose the chance of having a grandfather or grandmother.

My father was 39 years old and overweight and a smoker he saw what happened to his brother and what was happening to him. and he changed his ways.  He went on the Pritikin diet to lose wt and lower his cholesterol. He quit smoking and began to exercise.

He made it to 72 years old before needing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. His dietary and lifestyle changes have helped him to outlive his brother and uncle by over 20 years.

YOU TOO can potentially add DECADES OF HEALTHY LIVING to YOUR LIFE When you choose to eat healthy, you are choosing to be healthy, to try to live longer.  You are choosing life. In the USA, people will often make fun of you for eating a largely vegetarian diet.

I have heard people say things like, “that’s a nice meal for a rabbit.  How could you not want desert. Vegetarians are wimps. They don’t eat enough protein. ” (This is a myth) I am not afraid of being teased about my diet.  I know that 4 years ago when I was overweight and unhealthy, I didn’t feel good.  I felt old and tired and fat and afraid of having a heart attack at an early age. I was drinking too much coffee. Now I feel good, like the clock has been turned back about 7 years.

I am not afraid of occasionally being teased. What I am afraid of, is an unnecessary heart attack at a young age. That’s right, I said unnecessary death. Because most heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementias are preventable.

They are preventable by adapting to a healthy diet that prevents development of severe coronary atherosclerosis.  I do think it is important to make a psychological transition towards healthier eating. I recommend that you try to eat for nutrition, and not just for pleasure.

Eating can and should be both healthy and enjoyable. Yes, healthy eating tastes good. However, there is not the instant gratification that comes with some fast/processed food.  Healthy eating may take a little more work.  It takes a little more effort to make a salad or a whole grain pasta than to throw some junk food into the toaster or the microwave.

It is easier to make big changes than small ones because they are clear cut and definitive. I am not saying drink less soda pop.  I am saying that you shouldn’t drink soda pop anymore. It is full of simple sugars and is acidic and promotes dental cavities as well as weight gain.

I am not saying try to eat less trans fats. I am saying do not eat anything that contains trans fats. It is these major changes in diet that yield results. By just avoiding soda pop and other heavily sugared beverages as well as foods containing trans fats, you will remove a lot of unnecessary calories from your diet.

In summary: If you want to lose weight and feel better, you should move away from the Western/North American diet of excessive simple sugars and saturated fats. And you should move towards a the Rogers Diet with of lots of .................... and..........................................................................................

This is the path to health and to thinness and to decreased cardiovascular risk.
